Geek or Nerd

A friend of mine researched and wrote a history of the word nerd. Near the bottom he discusses the difference between geek and nerd. He prefers nerd. I tend to prefer geek - and have a t-shirt with the word boldly displayed in large white letters on a black background. I just like the sound of geek better. I'm not sure there is a real difference in meaning. If you've been following my comments you will see that others disagree. I thought the topic deserved it's own note though. Feel free to weigh in on this troubling issue.

I'm a nerd. I personally look at the term "nerd" is something more internal (more of a personality) while attributes of a "geek" is more external like their dressing or gadgets they use.

There are all sort of nerds, I am information junkie - nerd. I have insatiable compulsion for knowledge, and identifying process optimisation/improvements. Before that I was a comic nerd. Those were the days when I would compare market price guide from montly Wizard magazine and scout around comics shops to accquire the cheapest price for those silly variant/shinny/hologram comic covers.

Sorry, I would not be catch dead with a .geek t-shirt. But then again, I often wear my Microsoft polo t-shirts everywhere I go. So what am I?

A geek is cooler than a nerd more because there is no www.thinknerd.com :))

I personally prefer geek too. I associate nerd with liking Star Trek and all those other Sci-Fi tv programmes, which amazes people when I say I can't stand them, and carrying books under their arms (I watched Saved By the Bell too much)

As a former RPI "knurd", I am proud now to bear the term "geek", and yes, even have the T-shirt.

I've of course heard of www.thinkgeek.com; in addition, I know that one of the largest computer chains has "Geek Squad" who will come to your home (for a price) to fix your computers.

To me, nerd was always derogatory, but "geek" was almost complimentary (almost).
