When time is more than money

This is the sort of thing that makes me proud to work for Microsoft.

Microsoft will give every employee in Asia three-days paid leave this year to pursue community service projects aimed at narrowing the digital divide in the continent, the company said Friday.

That's great to know! I'm going to contact our Community Affairs group to get more involved. And for the majority of the Southeast Asian countries, this is wonderful.

Microsoft has the right idea! We've been working with several industry partners. It's these details that separate the "newbies" from the more evolved. Some partners want to work with education as part of their corporate social responsibility thrust, but they expect their employees to still put in the 40 hours or whatever per week. In other words, they don't give employees time off for these sorts of initiatives, just extra pay. What's the use of extra pay if you don't have the time? Furthermore, this makes schedules rather inflexible. The work with academia has to be scheduled based on their availability rather than on what is most convenient for the students. So hooray for Microsoft.
