Viva Las Vegas

Well this has been a longer time than usual for me to go without blogging. My wife and I took a vacation to Las Vegas and for five whole days I didn't really connect to the Internet at all. I sort of kept up with email using my Treo (running Windows Mobile 5.0 of course) but didn't answer any. Well maybe one or two but that's it. Las Vegas is not a traditional place to go for the Thanksgiving holiday but for a number of reasons traditional was not what we wanted. We wanted to just get away.

Las Vegas is pretty unreal in a lot of ways. That's what we were looking for - there is too much reality in our daily lives of late. And the places we wanted to stay in Disney World were booked so when we got a very nice price for a stay at the Luxor (where Bernard stayed recently) our decision was made. We had a pretty good time. We ate well. I gained about four pounds as I pretty much fell away from my diet. I could have stuck to it easily but for some reason I did not put the will-power into it. I'll be hard at work losing the weight now that I am home again.

We did a lot of tourist things this trip. The Star Trek Experience (not really worth the cost even with the half price ticket we had) for example. And the fountains at the Bellagio which are outdoors and free to watch. One day we rented a car and drove to and through Red Rock Canyon. Now that was worth the price of a car rental. We went to the top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel and Casino and saw the whole city at night from there. And we ate - a lot. We only ate twice a day but we mostly ate and buffets and ate a lot of different things. One can eat well in Vegas. One can eat fast food and cheap food. Or you can spend some money and eat something very good and maybe even different.

Last night we took the red eye home and got home early this morning. We're tired but mentally we are refreshed and relaxed. It was a good vacation. Tomorrow it is back to reality. That is the worst thing about vacation - reentry into real life.

Did you do any gambling?

A little playing with the slot machines. That is gambling. Mostly I played poker which is a game of skill and not really gambling. I won some, lost some. I spent less at those activities than I would have on a major show ticket and had a lot more fun.

Did you noticed the incredible number of cigar smokers in Vgas? Also, did you collect one of those Mexcians “photo cards” along the street? <grin />

A lot more smoking in general than in the part of the country I live in. Much more cigars as well. I avoided picking up the "photo cards." Vegas is a lot of selling sex, gambling, eating, shows of all sorts and lots of other things that are not as common in other parts of the country. Smoking is pretty much out of favor in the US. In many states you can't smoke at all in public places. In Las Vegas smoking is allowed in most places. Not in poker rooms though. I am happy about that.
