Club Politics

Being involvement in club management for a certain period of time. I can claim truth to a fact that, "Even with the best of intention and ability, its not always the best man who wins".

I am involved in a club that is span across 2 campuses. Unfortunately, one half of the club wants to break the club and exisit on their own. They claimed that lack of support in the club activites from my campus as one of the reasons to break up. In life and everything else, you reap what you sow. If you sow little seeds, you get almost nil returns.

As my campus holds the smaller percentage of the club membership. Most of the events were held in other campus. I realised that it is useless to try to hold on to the old arrangement. Its best to let them (the other campus have their way).

What really irks me is the executive in the other campus wants to expand their membership to other related students. If they are not able to reach out to students of their own school, how would they think they can relate and attract students from other degrees?

End of it all, if they cannot even managed the club at its present size well. What confidence can one have that they can do a better job with a larger membership base?

I have other interesting opportunities awaits me beside the current one. But I am disappointed that with the best of my intentions, a good outcome is not possible with the current executive mindset.

This is a sad day for the club.

A club that spans across two campuses, I know the feeling. I was also involved in a club several years back where I was the only one in the committee from my campus while the rest of the committee were at the other campus. Although, there were some events held on my campus, not many were. All we had were a few movie nights, and I think one linux install day. Other than that, I don't think much else happened on my campus. I think that perhaps you can try pushing for a few smaller events to be held on your campus, and hopefully increase the membership number on your campus. I guess if it's a faculty/school based club, try getting further exposure through staff of that campus, as well as perhaps going to lectures introducing yourself to students, and informing them about the club and so on. I guess one way to show the other campus that things do happen on your campus, you firstly need sufficient membership numbers to push for events to be held on the campus. I've been involved with several clubs in the past, and I've noticed there's always the politics side of things, which I never agree with. Goodluck with the club!
