During the period of absence

Haven't been blogging for awhile. Should organise my thoughts before blogging, but I shall do otherwise.

Gotten really busy with things in uni. Currently involved in the international students orientation, the arrival of new students in my residence (international mews), attending various RA training programs and meetings and trying to understand the .NET Profiling API stuff.

I'm not whining but .NET Profiling APIs is such a joke. The good stuff about the framework and its cross language features lies in its CLR. I'm sure you have heard from some sources, that the beauty of .NET is you can write in your favourite language as long as it complies to CLR. However to access the .NET Profiling APIs is one execption.

Apparently, to access the APIs, you need to create a profiling object which implements the ICorProfilerInfo interface. The profiler (profiling object) is actually served up by a classic COM in-proc server. Yes! UN-MANAGED code to access managed code. As a result, I cannot use VB.NET or C# to create the profiler object because managed code can't profile managed code.

That is to say, I have to program in C++ and that is giving me the shivers already.

Spent quite awhile trying to make out the C++ syntax. I really wish I dun feel like now, but Im feeling rather unconfident to undertake the task.

But I got a deadline to show a prototype to supervisor on Monday. Oh well, a nuclear bomb can be build, what is a profiling application compared to that.

Haven't been getting much sleep. Routinely been going around the various units in my residences to check that the new residents are well settled and help them thru the initial rush of things such as getting a phone line connected and internet services. The amount of telcome packages ... wah lau ...beri alot and complicated leh (singlish expression) Had to get up in the middle of the night to receive residents arriving thru the wee hours around 2am and 5am. Didnt get much sleep.

In fact I haven't been in the gym for 4 days and still counting.

Got a personal training session scheduled for tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

What's going to happen this weekend? Ideally I want to bring my new residents around Melbourne, my neighbour from Singapore is coming to Melbourne this Saturday, and there is honours project to do.

There is so much to accomplish, just hope I got the substance to do it all.

I think it's good that you're helping new students adjust to life there - especially foreign students. Curious, why did you volunteer for this? Or is it a job? I also did similar orientation programs when I was in uni. It was fantastic.

I am a resident advisor for international mews so its part of my job description. Personally, I enjoy interacting with new students and helping them to settle down. There wasn't a resident support team system in place when I first moved in and so I'm proud to be one of the founding members that is still around ;) Back then, it wasn't easy to settle down without any grassroot support.
