Companies Snub Linux Desktops

Taken from Companies Snub Linux Desktops (Techweb) - 10th Aug

"Linux desktops, which seemed to hold some promise a few years ago, have failed to capture the hearts or pocketbooks of corporations, a market research firm said Wednesday. ....

... Companies found they couldn't run all their desktop software on Linux, and the open-source office products couldn't meet the needs of all workers. As a result, companies would have had to manage and maintain both Windows and Linux desktops, which would have been too expensive.

"Organizations decided they wanted to stay on a single platform for everyone..."

If my memory did not fail me, I recalled reading about a major telco in AU trying to adopt a linux desktop strategy. Months after much publicity, there was hardly any news about it. Since then, the CEO has left the organisation ...

Sidenote: Each weekend, I like to adopt a music theme for my weekend listening. Last week was all Aussie content weekend. So I had been listening to lots of ABC Classic, Nova 100 and ABC News. This week is All-American weekend. So Im gonna be listening to lots of Gershwin and jazz.

I see blog entry after blog entry like this around here and it raises a couple of questions in my mind. As a user of Windows, Linux, and Mac OS, I always find these OS arguments biased and silly. However, I really find it interesting to see so many entries like this at a place like the Spoke. It seems that either the faithful are being needlessly preached to, or there's a sales pitch being presented that shouldn't be required. Personally, when I hear too much competition bashing, it makes me think I need to check out the competition to see what the competitor is so afraid of, and I suspect that is why Microsoft's past Linux bashing campaigns have failed so miserably. Just a thought.

I agree partially with your comment about preaching to the "faithful". I have two reasons for blogging about it a) just in case there are among us who have thoughts about going over the other side for various previous ill-informed (IMHO) reasons; b) illustrating an age old wisdom about the cost and pains of supporting two different environment most of the time is just not worth it. I welcome your comment, keep it coming. Critical mind meant that someone is thinking and not taking things wholesale.

I want to add furthermore, 2 years back, I really thought that people will really move over to Linux desktop. I had my reservations its adoption rate, particularly because of end user inertia towards new changes. I guess this recent article just kinda prove my earlier thought :)

I also thought that the threat of Linux will convince more Windows users to shift. Good thing, they have released Windows Server 2003. In a way, that product gained Microsoft's respect (except for some zealots or ABM's).
