I think you have to be very deliberate about balancing work and the rest of your life. I end up blocking off time for things outside of work. I try to keep my weekends and evenings free. I don't always succeed, but I make an effort.

When my wife makes up a mock hotel bill for me when I return from a business trip I figure that I have been on the road enough. :-)
Seriously though it can be hard to find the right balance. My wife does help me to find it when I at times get too caught up in work. And I help her in the same way. For a single person it much be much harder. I've been married for almost my whole work career and engaged for most of the time before that so I am lucky I think.
