Sometimes, the best things in life are for free. Last evening, I was at the Sydney Opera House Forecourt (from 6pm) to witness and experience first hand, the Vienna Philharmonic historic first performance in Australia via live simulcast from the Concert Hall. The orchestra was joined by the great Russian conductor - Valery Gergiev, performed a thrilling program of Mozart (Symphony No.36) and Tchaikovsky (Symphony No.5).
Despite its length, I particularly enjoyed the Tchaikovsky’ Symphony No. 5. My attention was fully focused on the intensity of the symphony as well as the orchestra’s sheer concentration and determination. The opening movement reflected the richness and grandeur of the Russian heritage (not to be confused with the sense of opulence) and the final movement found my head nodding in the tune of a triumph final march.
Bravo Vienna Philharmonic! Bravo Maestro Gergiev!
