Sweeter the second time?
Tuesday, November 29, 2005 3:12 PM
We had our ACM post-mortem yesterday.  We talked about the good and bad aspects of the experience (mostly bad).  We talked about the good and bad feedback from the coaches (mostly bad).  At the end of the discussion, we took a vote: Should

My mom is celebrating her 75th birthday tomorrow.  In her honor, I am hosting a party in my house.  I am expecting over 50 friends and relatives to come.  I don't host parties very often so to me this is a major event. I'm happy to do

Thanks, everyone for all your encouragement and compliments. *** There's an expression we sometimes use to describe people.  We say that he or she is "cowboy." It essentially means that the person can easily adapt, even to the most

Still in the gray
Tuesday, November 22, 2005 10:03 AM
I attended the awarding ceremony of the Doreen Fernandez Food Writing Competition last night.  I didn't win.  I was a finalist, but that was about it. I confess I'm not feeling emotionally intelligent right now.  Mostly, I'm disappointed.

Knowledge <> Ability to teach
Monday, November 21, 2005 8:35 AM
I interviewed a prospective teacher.  I asked him, "What makes you think you can teach?" He said, "Well, because I'm the only one who knows XYZ subject."  I didn't think this was a good response.  Knowing something does not make you able

Saturday, November 19, 2005 2:04 PM
Who's that pretty girl! *** It's 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon and I'm still in school.  It's amazing the amount of work that never seems to end.  New stuff.  Continuations of old stuff. Old stuff long thought dead and then suddenly

More 7 updates; Harry Potter 4
Friday, November 18, 2005 7:34 AM
I am happy to say that 7 is walking almost normally already.  She still has a slight limp, but it doesn't stop her from roughhousing with her siblings.  She used to just lie apart from the others.  Now she's interacting with them.

I am soooo embarrassed!!!
Thursday, November 17, 2005 1:02 PM
There's a statistic that says that, the more educated you are, the lower your IQ.  Well, ladies and gentlemen of theSpoke, I am living proof of this. My office, F210, is inside another office F209.  To get into F210, you have to enter F209

I missed teaching!
Wednesday, November 16, 2005 10:21 AM
I didn't realize how much I missed teaching until I started my class yesterday.  I got to share all the pictures that I had taken of strange, unusal, and perplexing designs of everyday things.  It was a lot of fun for me.  I hope it was

7 updates; Introductions
Monday, November 14, 2005 6:43 PM
7 visited the vet today.  The x-ray revealed that nothing was broken. She is suffering from muscular trauma, which leads us to suspect that the mother stepped on her at some point, though we will never know for sure.  She's on painkillers and

One of our puppies, codenamed "7" because she was the 7th to be born, is having difficulty walking.  I noticed last night that she was dragging her hind legs.  I thought she was just sleepy.  This morning, though, she was still having trouble

A day spent with peers; Meeting wth former students

I generally resist the idea of spending time outside of normal school hours on school-related events.  However, when I must participate, I invariably enjoy the company of my peers.  Today was one such day.  Ateneo has insituted a series

The right reasons
Wednesday, November 09, 2005 12:25 PM
I've heard people--myself included--bristle at ingratitude.  The complaint follows a standard formula: it starts off with a litany of everything they've done for so-and-so and concludes that so-and-so is ungrateful or unappreciative. One of the

Self-absorption

Weird
Thursday, November 03, 2005 6:17 PM
Now and then, I meet someone who starts off the conversation with a long litany of their qualifications. I don't mean, or "I'm with so-and-so insitution," I mean, "I invented the Internet"-types of introduction.  This immediately sets my alarm
