Disruption
Monday, February 27, 2006 3:23 PM
I will give the people involved in the latest coup attempts the benefit of the doubt and say that they are idealists.  That's about as charitable as I'm going to get. So here's the thing, from my perspective:  Government and our governing systems,

Does googling verify existence?
Friday, February 24, 2006 5:52 AM
So if I google someone's name and I get zero hits, does that mean the person does not exist? I tried to do a background check on someone who emailed me and came up with squat. I found that completely bizarre.

Update on Nanny; More on the Google grant; ACM practice; Summer camp
Tuesday, February 21, 2006 9:28 AM
Nanny was up and about by yesterday lunch.  We kept telling her to get back to bed, but I think she was going nuts just lying there.  She seemed perfectly normal again this morning, but we are keeping an eye on her. Thanks, everyone, for your

Nanny
Sunday, February 19, 2006 9:06 PM
So many people are sick nowadays!  I have a Nanny who has been with my family for over fifty years.  She is part of the family already.  She has lived with me since I was born. When I got married, she moved with me to my house. This evening,

Nasty; Father-in-law updates
Saturday, February 18, 2006 7:47 AM
Yesterday started out very well, but ended very badly.  Something at work completely imploded.  Just when I thought things were smoothed over, a subsequent conversation only made matters worse.  Things were said that probably shouldn't

Questions of professionalism
Friday, February 17, 2006 7:16 AM
During Bev's talk last Sunday (I seem to be quoting Bev a lot--just goes to show that I was listening!), she said that one of the things that she learned from the Ateneo was accustomed excellence. What she meant was that doing your best was a means of

Do I like my job?
Wednesday, February 15, 2006 7:39 AM
With frustration bubbling so close to the surface recently, I found myself asking whether I liked my job.  The answer?  Time to get philosophical.  During Bev Almazan's talk last Sunday, she quoted Aristotle as saying, "We are what we habitually

Ask and you shall receive
Tuesday, February 14, 2006 11:10 AM
Just when I was feeling desperate for some quiet time, I got it!  This morning has been very quiet.  I actually got to scratch off several tasks from my list!  I now keep two lists: a list of things that I have to do myself and a list

Open house; In need of quiet time
Monday, February 13, 2006 8:39 PM
Thanks, everyone, for your good wishes for the open house.  It went pretty well.  Marc and Bev were very entertaining--they broke the staid, serious talks from us oldies.  It's difficult to predict what will happen now.  As Fr.

Open house today
Sunday, February 12, 2006 8:16 AM
We're having the second of three open houses later this afternoon.  Open houses can be very stressful.  Aside from the time and the expense, there are so many uncontrollables, most notably the temperament and predisposition of the guests.

Time with friends
Saturday, February 11, 2006 4:30 PM
One of life's purest pleasures is spending time chatting with friends.  My family and I spent most of yesterday and this morning with my eldest brother and some of our good buddies.  We sat around, drank, snacked, talked about everything, and

Losing again
Thursday, February 09, 2006 6:56 PM
I received word today that a grant proposal I submitted was turned down.  I am, as usual, disappointed.  I'm not altogether surprised, though, because I have the worst luck with grants.  I never seem to "get" what a granter wants. I

I wrote this article for the LS Bulletin.  I'm not sure it will be printed, so I thought I would post it here because it is worth spreading the word. Karen Michelle S. Padilla (MIS’05) and Timothy Robert S. Robles II (MIS’05) returned from six-month

Family situation
Monday, February 06, 2006 8:59 AM
I've been reluctant to blog about this, but since Redg has already put it on his blog, I may as well put it on mine: My father-in-law was just diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer.  He was in the hospital for ulcers last week.  In the course

Family days
Saturday, February 04, 2006 8:47 PM
When I was growing up, school took care of school and family took care of family. More and more, though, school has become a substitute for family. So, more and more, schools have to create venues in which families must get together. Schools organize

President's Day
Friday, February 03, 2006 1:40 PM
The first Monday of February is a school holiday called President's Day.  Years ago, during President Joseph Estrada's first year in office, one of our faculty chuckled at the announcement of no classes.  He said, "Si Erap talaga, o, ang dami-daming

Crazy week
Thursday, February 02, 2006 7:31 PM
I consider myself to be a pretty tech-savvy person, but I must confess that I still love paper.  I love writing down my to-do list because I feel a tremendous amount of satisfaction when I cross something off it or crumple it up and throw it away.
