for their valiant efforts!

Overall, we did ok. The reality is (and I've said this to the teams) that we did not do as well as we had hoped but we did not do as badly as we had feared.  I had hoped but not expected that we'd make it again to the World Finals.  I had really hoped we'd rank in 10 at least.  I had expected that we'd be the top Philippine team.  So, we realized one out of three hopes.

Contending for the top Philippine spot were Persistence, one DLSU team, and one UP Diliman team.  In the end, they all scored four points.  DLSU came in at 15th place. UPD came in at 16th.  We beat DLSU by a margin of 12 minutes. DLSU beat UPD by something like 22 minutes.  These margins are too close for comfort.

So here's the wake-up call: If Ateneo wants to remain on top, we have to work much, much harder.  The other local universities are already nipping at our heels and if we relax now we're going to slip behind.

How do you prepare a team for an event like that? I can't imagine it is easy.

They practice for a whole sem. They have special lessons on graph theory, math, etc. and then they have simulated contests. It's hard work, yes, not easy at all--for both the faculty and the students.

Congratulations to the teams! Like you said, there is still a lot more work to do. Nevertheless, I don't think there was any shortage of effort from the contestants and coaches. It's hard to predict how every ICPC contest will turn out. Sometimes you just get really lucky with the problems. :)
