Maturity in blogging; Waning interest in ICTs

To Bernard:  Hahaha!  I'm not sure I actually behave as maturely as I blog.  I may talk a better game than I play. :)

One of the biggest problems confronting the department is the waning interest in ICTs.  There are fewer and fewer incoming students who want to take CS or MIS.  This is ironic because skilled ICT workers are in demand here and abroad.  Careers provide both geographic and upward mobility.  But there are fewer and fewer takers each year.

I really think the industry has to take a more active hand in undergraduate recruitment.  They have to start evangelizing at the high school level to encourage students to choose IT careers.  From my experience, all the recruitment that happens is at the graduating senior level--to get these grads into their companies.  By then, it's far too late to address the population problem.  Industry has to think much longer-term.

Declining ICT enroolment is a huge problem in the US and most universities are very concerned. So are many companies. We are seeing some joint efforts between uniersities and companies to try to promote the field in high schools. That sort of thing is actually part of my job. In many cases that is still too late though. The problem is that many students decide before high school that they are not going to go for a university education. They begin to make choices that prevent them from attending or at least from succeeeding in college even if they change their minds later.
Along with HS curriculum some at Microsoft are starting to look for ways to get students excited about ICT even earlier.

I can totally understand why students in AU are avoiding IT because of the horror outsourcing stories reported in the media.

But why do people in countries like in the PH are moving away from IT esp when local opportunites are aplenthly? Is it because IT is not sexy or are peopel trying to find an easier way out in life? Wage? Lifestyle?

Business models may change but I believe some things/ facts in life never change like honest hard work with intelligence applied.
