We're having the funeral mass today, which officially ends the wake.
The experience so far has been pretty surreal. My in-laws are very traditional. My family, on the other hand, is not, so many of the usual customs were pretty alien to me. The last wake I attended before this lasted less than one day. The cremated remains of the deceased were taken to chapel at 10 am. Throughout the day, people visited, paid their respects, and left. The mass was held at 8 pm. After that, everyone, including the deceased, went home.
This wake was, as I said, surreal because it was punctuated with people playing cards and chess, and taking pictures of the deceased to use as wallpaper for their phones. No malice intended, just a way to pass the time.
