"A nice lady"

An elderly man talked about his wife of four decades. When he decided to marry her, he described her to his relatives as "a nice lady."  You can't argue with success, but I found myself cringing at the description.  I guess to me "nice" isn't good enough.  I encounter "nice" every day, with any number of people, none of whom I have the slightest interest in dating, much less marrying.

I told my husband that if he ever described me as "nice" I'd slap him.

I now that in USA if you said to someone "Have a nice day" his day will be awful. Am I right?

Actually in the US it is quite normal to say "have a nice day" and nothing bad is associated with doing so.

I remember spending time in the west coast 2 years ago, people there tend to often greet others, even if they don't know them at all and say something polite about each other.

Nice? (hmm I could've been whacked before)

Guys, "nice" is just not a strong enough word to use to desribe a wife (or in fact anyone you love.) Wonderful, incredible, terrific, great, beautiful outstanding, amazing and words like those are better. Nice is just so pedestrian. Nice car, nice hat, nice shoes – those all sort of work. Compare those to incredible car, terrific hat, great shoes. You see the difference? Nice is sort of medium praise. You don’t use medium praise for a woman wonderful enough to marry. Or to put up with you. :-)

You can learn all sorts of things here at theSpoke. :-) And I hear that women like it when you notice their shoes. They are less impressed when you notice their car.

The female species is one tricky specimen, almost impossible to fathom. I'm with Alfred on the appropriate usage of "nice" especially with someone having to put with me :P
