I'm about half way through my second term as chair--that's about a year-and-a-half to go. It sounds like a lot of time but it's actually not very long at all. Next school year, I plan to begin turning over to whoever the next chair will be, so that person has some time to adjust.
I've had some chats with people about who that next person might be. Nothing's firm and of course it's not our decision but that of the administration. What is clear, though, is that everyone is flawed. Fr. Ben officiated mass yesterday evening in celebration of his 50th anniversary as a member of the Jesuits yesterday. In his homily he said that God does not care as much about our flaws and our sinfulness do not matter as much as He does the generosity of our response to the mission He gives us. Fr. Ben has a gift for saying just what I need to hear. The question, at the end of the day, is who is willing to live up to the responsibility.
