As many of you may know, today is THE DAY for the Ateneo Eaglets (the high school basketball team). Whoever wins will be UAAP champion. It is also potentially THE DAY for the Ateneo Blue Eagles. If they win today's match against UST, we will be UAAP champions for the first time in four years. If they lose, one final game will be played on Sunday.
Yesterday, the freshmen asked if it was true that they were only half-day today. At the time, classes hadn't been called off yet because of the typhoon. I said I heard no such thing. They also asked if it was true that, if we won, we would have a school holiday. Nah, I said, Ateneo doesn't do that.
Truth is, while we hero-worship our athletes, they don't get cut a whole lot of slack. I heard that, last year, when the men's football team won the finals, the captain disappeared immediately after the game--to take an exam. I blogged before that, when our Lady Eagles lost the championship a couple of years back, they were in their classrooms the next day, taking their final exams with everyone else.
So, I told the freshmen, if the athletes themselves don't get special treatment, how much less the non-athletes?
Update: Sorry, everyone, the game has been suspended to Saturday, September 30, because of the inclement weather. I guess we'll have to be patient for a couple more nights.
