My grandparents had six daughters and one son, my dad.  My grandfather was very possessive of his girls.  He used to tell them that he saw no reason why a woman should get married.  She became a nursemaid, housemaid, and a sex partner without pay, plus she had to earn a living.  What sense did that make?

When televisions were first made available in the Philippines, he bought one, brought it home and set it up in their living room. He then called his daughters together, showed them the TV and said, "Now you don't have to date anymore, ok? This should keep you company." 

Of my six aunts, four got married.  One is still single.  The other became a nun.  I guess his advice only worked in part.
