To Alfred: My grandfather loved being married. He loved my grandmother very much. He was a great romantic--he would write her notes like, "Without you, the stars no longer shine."
With regards to his daughters, he pooh-poohed marriage because he wanted to keep them with him forever, plus he didn't think anyone was ever good enough for them. But when they did get married, he treated his sons-in-law well. I understand he had them investigated while they were still courting, though.
