Sigh, sigh, and sigh... (stressful week)
Saturday, September 10, 2005 1:32 PM
The Microsoft Philippines Community Forums which I manage has become a big headache for me this past few weeks culminating in this week.

The forums started out as a small hobby type project of my colleague Andre Ngo for the MSDN Community in the Philippines. On that success, our CRMG Manager suggested that Microsoft Philippines have its own. After seeing the surprising (yes we were surprised) activity which followed Andre and I embarked on a project to merge the two forums.

Anyway, it was a free and open venue for people involved with Microsoft Philippines to come and share views, comments, suggestions, ideas, etc. What was great was that it wasn't stiff. People would come in and present opoosing views. I would almost never censor a post unless it was really inappropriate. The banter went from anywhere from configuring Windows Server, to Linux-Windows discussions, to even love (yes, love).

On my part, while never really being part of my job, I did my part on behalf of Microsoft Philippines to respond to some questions. In the beginning, there was Andre, Ritchie, and a few others who would post. When Andre changed roles and Ritchie became too busy, I was left to manage and respond in the forums, despite my attempts to get my colleagues involved. Not to blame them, we are all busy and some are shy when it comes to posting publicly. So I do my part every now and then.

Strictly speaking, I involve myself in two areas Events and Security which are my job functions in the company. In the beginning, I was mostly server since I was then the Server Product Manager.

Anyway... in January this year I put up a licensing section when I realized a lot of people had licensing concerns. It would have on occasion a few questions and averaged around 15-20 questions in the 8 months it existed.

Recently the BSA (Business Software Alliance) together with the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) and the OMB (Optical Media Board) decided to launch an Anti-Piracy Campaign.

Well and good, but all of a sudden the site was inundated with posts on Licensing questions. Specifically... Internet Cafe Owners.

In the beginning I would patiently answer each and every question. And then I noticed that people would start posting trhe same questions over and over again. But I would still answer the questions. I realized that people started asking specific questions based on their specific situation. It was either... they were lazy to look through old posts... or it seems like it was not enough to read past questions and see what fit their situation, they wanted tailor-fit responses. But still, with patience growing thin I would still respond.

Then the posts became more abusive. "Please answer ASAP!" And more bizzare they were directing the questions to ME only. If other people would respond, like Bobbit, they would be told to shut up because they expected responsed from "Sir Jojo" exclusively. And when I failed to respond, I remember one post going "Buhay pa ba si Sir Jojo? Tanong tayo ng tanong, wala naman sumasagot." It is when I read that that I started to become so preturbed. It was a community site... it was for the community to interact... it wasn't an "Ask Jojo Site."

My last few posts on the matter evolved to "This has been answered below". And I would only respond to matters that indeed needed a unique response.

I realize that many of them are frustrated and they had no one to turn to... they were frustrated with resellers and distributors so they showed up in the Forums.

What they don't understand that in the background, we are doing everything humanly and inhumanly possible to make things easier for them. They complained, so my colleague moved heaven and earth to get a special offer for the these people approved... and yet they still complain.

It was stressing me out to no end. For one week, my colleagues tried to convince me to just stop. Friends on the Forums told me to stop posting. And so finally, for my own stress level... I stopped.

To make matters worse, my best friend tells me when I brought it up that his issues were bigger than mine so I should just stop complaining. That didn't help one bit and I found I had no one to turn to... to vent or just to get a consoling ear... buit that is the topic for another blog entry.

On a separate note... the whole stress blew out of proportion when an article came out on INQ7.NET (and later a plagerized article on Malaya) which quoted a post I made on the Bintana issue. I did that post to quiet down the issue and the press made it bigger and took my post out of context... talk about irresponsible journalism. I theorized that they were having a slow news day and needed something to write about so they invaded the sanctity of the Forums, designed for free-wheeling discussion. Now I have to watch what I say and how I say it because I never know when someone will take my posts and twist it around for their purposes again.

Someone did comment that it is a testament to the success and the popularity of the forums, which from its humble begginnings is gaining its credibility. While I agree, it does not change the fact that my stress this week has shot through the roof and proves a rather cynical view...

No matter how good your intentions and actions are... someone will always pull you down.

Why I am in Microsoft
Monday, August 01, 2005 1:35 PM

I wrote this in January for the company newsletter. I thought I'd share it.

Why I am in Microsoft

By Jojo Ayson, Microsoft Philippines

Written for MicroNews, published Feb 4, 2005

I joined Microsoft Philippines way back in September 2000 as a Technology Specialist for the then yet-to-be-launched BizTalk Server 2000 and Commerce Server 2000.  A little more than a year later, I transferred to Marketing where I have been a Product Manager ever since handling a range of products from Exchange Server to Windows Server to Microsoft Business Solutions.

When I am asked why I joined Microsoft, I often give the shallow reason that I joined company “because it’s Microsoft.” For many a techie, Microsoft is the Mecca of techdom and just to be associated with Microsoft is something, but to actually work for Microsoft is pure nirvana.

Why I remain with Microsoft is a totally different matter altogether. As a techie and gadget freak, Microsoft is a haven for anyone who wants to be at the forefront of bleeding edge technology. Getting the chance to see, experience, and eventually talk about new and fantastic new products, technologies, and solutions is a big thrill. It is there where my passion lies. It’s like letting a kid loose in the biggest toy store on the planet. It’s fun to work for this company.

Then there is the more profound side. Earlier on, I was just thrilled to work for a company that has had such profound impact to both businesses and households around the planet. Today, that “thrill” has taken on a different sense of pride. After nearly 5 years, I look back and I tell myself that I have contributed, albeit in a small way, to the very impact I was referring to. My job takes me to different parts of the Philippines, and wherever I go, I see people with a genuine appreciation and respect for our company an our products. And for me, just to be able to contribute to that is a small way gives me tremendous sense of worth and accomplishment. As cheesy as it may sound, this company has helped me take my passion for technology and “realize my full potential.”

Finally, I think the best thing about working for Microsoft is the fact that there is never a boring moment. My job, my products, and my company is constantly changing, constantly evolving. It’s like think of our lives at Microsoft as one long beta-test, we will never really reach RTM.

As a “technology evangelist” for Microsoft Philippines, I’ve often told anyone who’s asked that I simply love my job and that I love the company I work for. At Microsoft, we are confronted by situations, issues, and opportunities that you would not experience in any other company out there. Definitely, I would have to say that there is no other company in the world I would rather be with right now.

So why am I in Microsoft? Because I love it!

SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio .NET 2005 Launch in November
Thursday, July 07, 2005 11:34 PM
I have a lot of stuff planned for the next six months. My biggest project will be the SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio .NET 2005 Launch. I have relinquished my PM role for these two products to Femee Cruz who started as PM on Monday, but she still asked me for help on the event side of things.
With four months to go, we have a lot of plans laid out for this.

Its all set for November xx, after the US Launch date of Nov 7th.

Ok. Fine. I am not a patient man. Anyone who knows me will say that I snap every dumb remark I hear, and I don't care who I crush in the process....

But alas, I need to be patient. But it is so hard. Some people are just so narrow minded. Mas maganda yata pag tagalog... ANG KITID NG PAG-IISIP NILA!!!!

Sigh.

What to do, what to do...
Friday, July 01, 2005 1:09 PM
I manage the company Forums site. To a certain degree its been really fun. But every now and then there are a number of idiots that post the dumbest posts. I assume these are either:

1) Just to get on my nerves
2) These are spies from the oher camp and post to stir things up
3) or They are really idiots.

Sigh...

I was muddling around the internet and our internal intranet for a while earlier. There is some debate going on the forums about IE vs. FireFox... so I decided to look up the numbers. Even before SP2, FireFox had more open  vulnerabilies than IE. Post SP2, Firefox has more than half. And more exploited vulnerabilities at that. But alas, IE is still the bigger target, so per capita, mas IE is attacked (not necessarily successfully) more than FireFox. Oddly though it does seem that FireFox's previous strengths are now its weakness... specifically its Open Sourceness has now show how vulnerable the platform potentially is.

RUBISH!!!
Sunday, March 27, 2005 4:03 AM
I'm sorry. There are just too many blinded by their own bullshit... take this comment from Mozilla Foundation's president and snake, Mitchell Baker who said "Even with increased popularity, the Firefox Web browser won't face as many security problems as Internet Explorer, according to the president of the Mozilla Foundation." But I am happy that there are those that do not take such crap sitting down... "Some critics challenge that assumption. Symantec CEO John Thompson and other security executives have claimed that open source programs will become more vulnerable as they pick up more users, because more hackers will become attracted to it."

What is the big deal?
Saturday, March 26, 2005 4:45 AM
I'm getting sick and tiered of these blind sanctimonious FireFox followers. So use it. But stop telling us IE Loyalists to switch. Oh... am just so itching... FireFox, despite its past (yup, PAST) reputation for being secure has more security holes and more vulnerabilities than post SP2 IE. And enough about the rendering, any difference is because IE and FireFox renders sites differently, kaya nga some seem faster than other... and I mean SEEM.

Basta, pagod na ako sa isang napaka-useless na usapan. Both browsers are free. So anyone is free to choose what they want. Pero, naiinis na ako sa mga makitid na utak!!!

Anyway, its nice to know that developers are now turning their back on what used to be the darling of the IT News. As I predicted, more and more FireFix vulnerabilities are now coming to light. As more and more hackers are now developing exploits for the once pride of the Open Source community.

The tide is turning....
Sunday, March 20, 2005 12:29 PM
Nice to see the tide turning for Firefox. Hehehe... them losing developers, community support, plus exclusive partnerships. Their lax security finally being highlighted. Naturally, blind die-hards will deny this... pero bahala na sila. All I can say is that "the truth shall set you free" and with Firefox... the truth is finally coming out.

The Definition of a Security Vulnerability
Thursday, March 17, 2005 12:44 AM

My primary role in life today with Microsoft Philippines, after years of fuddling around with Product Marketing, centers around Security. And to start, one really needs to define what a Security Vulnerability is.

Below is a link to a definition used by the MSRC...

I've decided to devote The Spoke to my work-related blogs. For those who know me... you know what that means...

My personal blogs, such as my bitching on movies and stupid people at ATMs will be on my personal blog site... again, those who know me will know where to find it. :)
