Digging up the road

Had a very pleasant evening in the pub. It was quite busy, what with a football match on the telly in full swing. Outside a man with a pneumatic drill was digging up the roundabout. I hope it was road works, I can't think of a particularly good reason why anyone would want to steal a roundabout. I guess they do it out of office hours because the overtime is worth having. Anyhoo, they were still at it at 6:00 am this morning you'll be pleased to hear (not that I was still in the pub at that time).

All around Cottingham where I live roads are being dug up. Apparently they are replacing the main gas feeds, which of course are in the road. I'm not sure how this planning actually works. Did they have a meeting where it was decided that the best place to put the pipes is underneath the bit that everybody drives on?

I've often thought that they should dig big tunnels through all the towns and put the roads on top and all the utilities in the tunnel. That way there would never be a need to dig up the roads. probably cost too much though. But if I ever build a planned community ...
