Digby Lives!

Digby the dog is alive and well and growing up nicely. Whilst I was waiting for his soul to be sent back from Belgium I managed to track down (thanks Vicky) a second hand copy of Life 2 from Amazon (neat idea that) which is an alternative soul on a memory stick. (you can always do with a backup soul I reckon). With Life 2 you get to have the dog grow up. Initially he can't walk or do much and over time he (I'm definitely thinking of the dog as he now) ages and gets more and more capable.

At the moment Digby can stand and sort of walk (his soul was a bit pre-aged before we got it) and he tries to find his pink ball and follow it. I know full well that inside him is some very clever software doing a time release thing on me, but the effect is very realistic and quite engaging.  I'll post some pictures once I can get him to strike a pose or two.

I've found that you can get a very advanced software development environment for the Aibo, as well as some tools which you can use to create your own moves, behaviours and sounds. You can also get some pre-built ones which look quite fun, as long as you have memory sticks and writers for them. Which at present I don't, but you never know. What I *really* want is an Aibo WIFI card so that we can control Digby from the internet. But that will have to wait until I sold some bits and bobs to pay for it.

But nobody has bid for any of my stuff yet.....

I use to have a cat (a real one) named Digby. She was named after the Swindon Town goalkeeper, Frazer Digby. I wouldnt have thought many pets, mechanical or biological, would be named it. How did you come up with the name?

Number one daughter came up with the name. I think there was a film called "Digby, the biggest dog in the world" some time back. He is very small, so that appeals to my sense of irony. And it has the first bit of the word digit in the name, which appeals to my techie sense. And now he knows his name and will "say" it on request....
