Magic 8 Ball

My dad went to Florida recently. He was there when the hurricane hit. Apparently it was very scary, but they were all OK. As a souvenir he brought me back an authentic "Magic 8 Ball". You ask it a question, turn it over and the "answer" appears in a blue window. My daughter has one as well.

We thought about asking them both the same question and seeing if they agree. I reckon there is a nice science fiction short story there about two balls that did agree, but I'm not sure how you would end it.

I'm going to take my ball to work and keep it in the office. I can kid the students that I use it for marking project reports....

I have a Magic 8 Ball program that I wrote. It uses a list of actual answers from the real magic 8 ball that I found on the internet. The binary is available in theSpoke files page. I always thought that was a cool toy.

I think I read that story while I was working on a college literary magazine. Not Sci-fi, though. Excellent story about a girl who communicates with her dead gypsy grandma through the 8 Ball.

An "authentic" Magic 8 Ball? Are they only made here in the states?

My 8 ball is branded as a "Mattel Original Classic Toy". My daughter has one which I think was a generic. I'm keeping mine in the box for posterity - but I can still use it....
