The Wonders of Remote Terminal

Something which has suddenly become even more wonderful is Remote Desktop Connection on Windows XP Professional. It lets me set up a remote session on a distant machine and use it as if I was actually sat there.

From using it to remotely check my email on my desktop at work it has now been the tool that I use to manage servers and hop around the network with abandon. I can get on with a bit of work on my office machine whilst in the teaching lab sorting out Class Server usernames. I can drop in on the Class Server host and twiddle the settings without even getting out of my chair. Lovely.

And last week Warren showed me a wrinkle that I hadn't noticed. If you tick on the box "Disk Drives" in the Local Resources setting dialogue for Remote Desktop you can see your own local storage reflected in My Computer on your target machine. This is fantastic for moving files around between systems. And to think I've been carrying flash memory devices around for ages....

My favourite song title (which I actually heard sung once) is a country and western song with the wonderful name: "You got the Goldmine, I got the shaft".
