Why Write Things Down?

I've noticed that I don't write things down as much as I used to. If I need to remember the model number of something I'm using, I'll take a picture of the item and file that away. When I wanted a new wheel trim for the car I just took a picture of the one that I wanted and took that into the spares shop. When I needed to note down the registration of the car last week, rather than write it down I used the phone to take a picture.

Sounds like overkill, but is it really? I'm a lot better at organising my pictures than just about anything else. They all sit on my hard drive and I've got programs that let me categorise them and add data to them about what they are. I really don't want to be bothered with bits of paper with writing on, I prefer it when everything is in one place, which I can search and sort really easily.

And when it comes to really important documents, the ones that we have spread around the house in hard to find files and folders, I'd love it if all this stuff was just on computer as well, so I could just find it. I don't want to have to find the paper insurance certificate (which is printed by a computer anyway), I want to just the information it represents in a file on my hard disk (or perhaps stored on a server somewhere else). Hopefully someone out there is working on a unified system which will represent all this stuff in a way which will stop me havig to turn the house upside down when I get asked for a bit of paper I seem to have "misfiled".

I like the idea of everything in digital format , right from insurance papers to any damn thing as it saves the natural resource and is environment friendly as well as saves you from going absolutely bizzare when it comes to find some document on a sheet of paper which somehow i reckon no one remembers where he has put it down... Hey... Richard nice point about Microsoft and Tablets ..I agree with you, i reckon this time Microsoft got it all wrong...

Aha! Digital ink just makes it easier for me to use the paper/ink medium (which lets me express myself in the best way in certain situation - for example drawing rough diagrams) in a digital way. But gives me all the advantages of a digital document. If you take a good look at OneNote you discover that, far from doing it all wrong - Microsoft are actually right on the nail with this one. As an example, we are using digital ink for the rough outlines of the mini-games we are creating in the Games Club. Very easy to draw and view. Very easy to archive and search.

Oh, and my phone is an SPV C500. Which is wonderful.
