You are in a boat in the middle of one of the seven seas. You get a message that another ship is in trouble 150 miles due east of your present position. Speed is of the esscence. Should you sail east?

Nope, you sail west. Due east means you are east of them, so you should sail west to find them. (If i can remember my a level mechanics work correctly)

Nope, if they are east of you I think that sailing in an easterly direction is a good idea. But do you sail due east?
