I Love Marking

Spent a big chunck of yesterday and today marking first year programming work. And loving it! Marking is usually hard work. Grinding through item after item in my office. But the marking I've just been doing is different. I've been sitting down watching students show of code that they have written. And this has been really fun. Firstly, I've been able to put faces to names I've seen on submissions and forum posts. Secondly there is some neat stuff out there. I changed the way that the marking works this year, and added 20% for "extras". If you just want to pass the course you can do just that, and aim for the spec. But if you want to impress there is 20% reserved in the marking scheme just for that. Some students took to soft option and went for the spec. Nothing wrong with that. Others took got the bit between their teeth and turned out some superb stuff, with extra features including sound effects, graphical user interfaces, you name it.

This is the first time that I've marked a first year programming assignment this way. But it is most definitely not the last. We are going to showcase some of the really hot stuff on the course web pages.

A number of teachers I know grade semester projects by interview. This will not work with a large class of course but for a class of 25 or so it works very well. What happens is that each student schedules a 20 minute time to demo the project and then explain the code. One of the things this helps to prevent is students using code from friends. If you can't explain the code that why should someone believe you wrote it? :-)

Gutted! Why could you not do that with us second years last year! Would have been really cool! Never Mind. Glad to here the C# stuff is going well!

The interesting thing is that Dr. Mike Brayshaw just told us that he wasn't able to mark our second year AI stuff like that because of all the annonymous marking fuss created by the Union. Personally I think it's quite a good idea, because you can make sure that the extras are shown off to their full, and as was mentioned, it stops people from blindly copying work. Even if people are going to get a "little help from friends" it means they still have to do a bit of brainslog to work out exactly what it is they're copying.

We have a bit more latitude about marking in the first year as the material does not count in the degree classification. It was a lot of work (there are around 130 in the first year). And I've a horrible feeling that we have a load more to do, but it was fun. And we will do it again next year. But it won't be Battleships - we will have to find a different game....
