1000 Watts and Eternal Sunshine

Yesterday I helped Dad set up his new surround sound system. The box says 1,000 watts of sound power. I've seen electric fires with less ouput. I reckon that you probably only get that kind of output for a tiny time interval, but it does seem rather a lot. We put some music on and it sounded rather nice. We are going to try with some nice noisy DVDs next..

Then we watched "The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". A compelling little film with a nice take on the way the mind works and the inevitability of fate. Watch it and enjoy, but make sure that you read the back of the box first so that it makes sense....

For me the best bit was seeing that they used an ancient Amstrad Portable PC as the controller for the memory eraser. Very strange.

Eternal Sunshine is a magnificent film, but I agree I found the use of the "old" machine to control the memory erasing "odd". What did you think of Jim Carey though? I thought for him, he tried to hard to rid himself of the comic type-cast that he has.

The weird thing about Dad's stereo is that it says "1,000 watts RMS" on the box. I've come across lies like "peak music power" in the past. These values are usually computed by repeatedly doubling the real power value until the number looks impressive enough. But this one is "supposed" to be genuine. Although I've no idea how we'd verify this.
