What Price?

Yesterday I got asked how much to charge for some work. Deciding the price of a job is really hard. One book says you decide how much it should cost and then multiply the value by three. That sounds about right to me, since I have always under estimated the amount of work involved.

The problem is that you now have to come up with the value to multiply by three.......

I suggested another approach, which is to decide what you want out of the job and then charge that price. Do you want a new CD player, TV or car? If you set your sights this way you should at least end up with what you wished for.

Ugh, I've always hated that. I always wonder what the other freelancers in my area are charging. Am I way overpriced? Are competitors laughing at my low-balling? Tough indeed.
