Finger Printing

I've just got hold of some of the new fangled Microsoft wireless mice with a fingerprint reader. The mouse is very similar to my previous one, with a couple of extra buttons I haven't dared press yet. The best mouse I have ever owned.

The fingerprint reader is nearly wonderful. The one on my home machine works just about perfectly. It always recognises my fingerprints and lets me on the system. The way that you can log onto web sites with the touch of a finger is really neat, although it doesn't always work because the pop up thing doesn't always pop.

The reader on my office machine (I bought two since I could just about afford them with my MVP bucks) is another matter. It worked just after I installed it but after a reboot it has failed to recognise anything. The hardware is fine, it must be conflicting with something on the machine - perhaps my virus scanner.

My verdict on this fingerprint stuff - from a hardware perspective the system is hugely impressive. From the software side things are not quite so rosy, but I reckon an upgrade will almost certainly sort that out. They are definitely worth serious consideration.

I noticed a fingerprint reader on windowsmarketplace.com and thought it was very interesting from a security point of view. However, while it is interesting it's also completely pointless for the average user. Definitely a niche thing.
