Had a really nice moment today. I was at a meeting of one of the university IT management committees, where we are trying to set policy for future computer developments on campus. The plan included (apparently inspired by me) provision for fun! We now have recognition at the highest level that when students (and staff for that matter) make use of computers it is not just for their job/learning. The computers and networks are important for the social aspects as well. I was very pleased to see this, and regard it as a major step forward. Students arrive at university with a lifestyle which is built around free and unfettered network connections. It seems to me only sensible to try to continue to provide this once they connect to our backbone. I'm looking forward to future developments with great interest.
