When it all goes wrong
Monday, January 30, 2006 8:34 PM
My office PC has failed. I thought it was the hard disk but it seems to be an "everything" kind of fault. I was trying to rebuild Windows XP on a replacement hard disk when it failed saying that some of the files it had fetched off the DVD did not agree

Glory Day
Thursday, January 26, 2006 8:34 PM
We had a degree ceremony today. I was in charge of giving the opening speech and getting the graduands (that is what they are called before they graduate) into line and making sure they behave themselves. Which they did splendidly. Today was the turn

Important Question
Wednesday, January 25, 2006 9:20 AM
This question came up yesterday, and I'm afraid that I don't know the answer, and I'm not in a position to experiment at the moment. You know how, if you smoke, you can blow smoke rings. Well, when it is so cold that you can see your breath, can you

Old Codger Racing
Tuesday, January 24, 2006 12:42 PM
I've been doing more online racing with Project Gotham Racing on the XBOX 360. From a technical point of view the experience is very good, but from a human one it frequently stinks. Now, I recognise that I am not a very good driver (I have to use the

I'm over the moon to be able to report that I'm going to the Games Developers Conference in San Jose in March. Not only that, but I'm giving a session: http://www.cmpevents.com/GD06/a.asp?option=G&V=3&id=444616 I'm really looking forward to

XBOX 360 : Watching the races
Wednesday, January 18, 2006 9:30 PM
I'm getting into this XBOX 360 live thing now. The latest trick is watching Gotham TV showing me other races. These are quite often hilarious. I've taken to leaving the machine playing music and rendering a race in the background as I get on with work

How to lose over 100 million pounds
Tuesday, January 17, 2006 10:15 PM
I've just managed to lose over 100 million pounds. Oh yes. That will teach me to keep my mouth shut in lectures. I bet the entire first year programming course a million pounds each that a C# program I had written would not work. It did. Curse you C#

XBOX 360 as a phone
Monday, January 16, 2006 7:24 PM
Just got off the phone. I was talking to Rory about this'n'that, but I wasn't using a phone as such, I was chatting using the XBOX 360 comms. This works surprisingly well. Not quite telephone quality, but pretty good. I've got more into online play over

..but can your watch do this?
Thursday, January 12, 2006 10:25 AM
I've been using my posh new watch this week. It is basically a Palm Pilot shoehorned onto a wrist strap. (I really wanted a Microsoft Spot watch but the service is not available outside the USA at the moment). Anyhoo, yesterday it did this: Nifty eh?

Don't Drive Drunk
Wednesday, January 11, 2006 9:33 PM
Kids, don't do it. I've just had a couple of glasses of red wine and then set forth on Project Gotham on the XBOX 360. Last week I managed to win all the trophies in Bronze and now I'm working my way through the silver cups. So, I thought I'd have a go

Mindstorms II
Tuesday, January 10, 2006 9:21 AM
Lego are upgrading their Mindstorms kits. Years ago I got the first Mindstorms and had great fun with it. If you are keen to get your kids into programming and technology (or you just want to have fun) Lego Mindstorms is a great place to start. The problem

Faith in Human Nature
Monday, January 09, 2006 10:06 PM
Today I was rather annoyed to find that my C Sharp Wiki (wwwdotcsharpcoursedotcom) had been attacked by all manner of dubious bots. I really get cross when this kind of thing happens, it upsets me to think that some people write code like this. Anyhoo,

Teaching Teachers to Teach Programming
Friday, January 06, 2006 9:37 PM
Today we did our talkie stuff. We had a great audience and a good time was had by all (at least, I enjoyed it and everybody I talked to seemed very happy). I must admit to some nervousness about taking to my peers (other university lecturers) about how

Maps that Lie
Thursday, January 05, 2006 11:27 PM
I went to London today. David and I are giving a talk to academics about teaching with .NET. I'm doing some stuff about my experiences with C# and David is doing Visual Studio and ROTOR. All good stuff. I'd not been to the hotel before today, so I thought
