Summer of Code 2006
Thursday, May 04, 2006 5:47 PM

Summer of Code 2006 is a program that offers student developers stipends to create new open source programs or to help currently established projects. Google will be working with a variety of open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several hundred projects over a three-month period. The inaugural instance of the program, which took place last summer, brought together 400 students and 40 mentoring organizations from 49 countries. We'd like to include even more organizations and participants this year.
The program's goals are to inspire young developers and provide students in Computer Science and related fields the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer, and to support existing open source projects and organizations. Since we're looking to find developers around the world (many of whom may have considered creating open source software but havent yet taken the plunge), we felt that concentrating on the student population was a good place to focus our efforts. Further, since no single organization could possibly mentor hundreds of students working on disparate projects, we thought it made sense to spread the work throughout the open source and free software community. We also think that the Apache Software Foundation (for instance) knows a lot more about what an Apache project needs than Google does and is more likely to ensure that an applicant gets the right kind of guidance so they can create acceptable code.
Office Validation Program Goes Live
Monday, May 01, 2006 1:39 PM
Just days after announcing its plans to attempt to thwart Office piracy by using the same kind of validation mechanism it has instituted for Windows, Microsoft posted for download the first Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) validated component. For now, OGA validation is voluntary; Microsoft declined to respond to our questions as to when OGA would become mandatory.
Bangalooru, Mangalooru, Mysooru, and more! Is this right?
Monday, December 19, 2005 6:52 AM
I was shocked when I saw the newspaper this morning. After changing the name of Bangalore to Bangalooru, the government here has changed the names for the rest of the cities within the state. The list goes like this; Mangalore will be Mangalooru, Mysore Mysooru, Hubli to Huballi, Gulbarga becomes Kalburgi and Belgaum will soon be called Belagaavi. God! This is so ridiculous; New names for all major cities within Karnataka! Changing the names of these cities can prove quite lethal to the economy of the state. People don’t understand the market stands and continue to change the names all because they want Karnataka as their local possession. The name change effects are going to happen next year around November. I seriously don’t want to be called a Bangalooru jackass! Do cast your views here. I would also like to know international comments on changing the name of the IT Capital of India, Bangalore.
Where're you guys?

We all see loads of Indians
registering at the moment! This is very nice and exhaling to see my
country mates showing overwhelming enthusiasm for theSpoke. Good work
people but I request you to participate in the given too. Do
participate at the forum and blog away! I find that the participation
from the Indians is pretty less [I could be wrong, don't misunderstand
me]. Anyways, my basic theme is to ask people out there to participate
more and help the community grow. Go people!

At the Launch at Bangalore, Bill Gates announced a unique competition
for all Indian final/pre-final students. The winner will get a chance
to work with Bill Gates as an intern. The competition official starts
on 1st of January next year. Meanwhile you can check the sample
questions available at the site. This a great oppurtunity for
all of us here from India. Best of luck to all going for this. What a
way to start the new year! Awesome!!

Funded by NIMHANS and Manipal Hospitals.. We plan to bang the party!! lol... Anyways... for now ;;; THIS WHOLE WEEK [ awesome ] i'm gonna be free and free and free [yipee!!].. Check Flock. A new web browser under build.. This is base on Firefox's open codes and is pretty neat. It's definately flashy compared to Firefox and has nice features that include, blogging directly(which is not so cool as we already have word plugins available), photo upload (kinda cool), staring the page (something to talk about), and a few more.. blah.. blah..
I dunno why i find it faster compared to firefox.. may be its jus my mind or is it something for really.. for now.. no comments... i'm waitin for it to be benchmarked and see the results.. till then, its my semester exams :'-(
