Media rich search engine or why google is crap
About 2 months ago I realized something.... that web search engines haven't changed much since I first started using them back in 1994. While Google is a billion times smarted than WebCrawler or Altavista were, the funny thing is, we're seeing the same boring lifeless results. What I mean is, I type a word and I get 10 links that have a webpage title, url and a little summary. How is this any different from what I used 10 years aog?!
In my opinion search engines are still using 1st generation output to give your results. It's way overdue we see some type of real innovation here. Google was nice but they need to take all their innovations and combine then to present a "content rich" results page. I'll post an example screenshot of what I'm talking about in the near future. But for a vocal explanation...
In a nutshell, when you type a keyword the search engine should search the web to figure out what it is. If I search for Terminator 3, Google has all the data needed to figure out that it is a movie and display a content rich results page with various boxes. The page could contain movie posters (grabbed via Google Image), movie listing times (assuming you store your zip code in a cookie), prices for the DVD, reviews, fan sites, related auctions, fan sites, etc. Each kind of result would be in a different box.
Maybe you're starting to see the potential here, and why I think search engine results are a joke. I feel like I'm giving away my brainchild, but I don't have the time or resources to code such a toy, it would take the power of google to retrieve & parse categorical information. Maybe I should dig out the google api and give it a shot, or maybe just let them (or somebody else) steal my idea. If you do steal it, send me some love via Paypal, I have a Honeymoon to pay for in 5 months!
ps: I couldn't figure out how to create a Paypal donate link, only a button that uses a form, and TheSpoke doesn't let me insert HTML code. But my Paypal account is owens /!at/! oneida /!dash!/ nation /!dot!/ org
UPDATE (Jan 20th, 2004) - It seems at least one other person realizes that today's search engines are dinosaurs as Yahoo just posted this news tidbit and had this funny little quote that I support "Today, search engines are like the 8-track tapes of the music industry"
