Big business says screw the enviroment, we want our $5
Not it's not news that somebody invented disposable DVDs that rot after 48 hours but I'm glad to see someone else get real upset about this.
I'm a huge environmentalist and I oppose any technology who's SOLE PURPOSE IS TO CREATE TRASH. I will admit the nature of today's market creates trash, you need packaging to ship and sell items, while that can be improve with more and better biodegradable boxes. Heck, my soap, shampoo, conditioner and laundry detergent are chemical free and biodegradable but I won't get hippy on you all.
The concept of a product that is designed to be Big business says screw the enviroment, we want our $5 thrown away should outright anger you and if you want to read about disposable DVDs and some opposition against it, check out this news story.
The true solution to temporary access to media should exist in the digital world via cable rental (like how every cable service offers already). To me, offering a DVD that rots is a step backward for humanity both in a technological sense and an environmental sense. Isn't the goal of humanity to make things better, easier, cheaper. And if producing less waste makes things better, what is producing more waste doing then?
UPDATE (Feb 2, 2004) - There has been some decent discussion in the subject here at CDFreaks.com.
