CD Map Antitrust pays off

CD Map Antitrust pays off

I just got my check from the CD Map Antitrust Litigation which was about consumers being ripped off from the music industry on the price of CD/Tapes/Vinyl and it came to a whopping $13.86.  The music industry had to pay off a total of $67,375,000 and if we assume the money was divided equally and everybody got the same as I, that means 4,861,111 people joined up in the lawsuit, wow.  It's too late to join in as the deadline was March 3, 2003.

What's really pointless about the whole lawsuit is that the music industry can still charge the same price for CDs in the store so what did this accomplish besides refunding consumers for the music they purchased over the past 8yrs?  This lawsuit was more like an apology instead of a fix from consumer ripoff.

My first thought was to use the money and spend it on iTunes or something but then I'd realize I'd only be feeding the greedy beast this money was rightfully taken from.  I think I'll go buy dinner instead.

Something similar happened here in the Philippines when the electric utility company was ordered to refund its customers... The refund was something like a few hundred pesos. :P
