DVD2 is on it's way, and Sony bought it out

DVD2 (aka BluRay) is on it's way, and Sony bought it out

Well it seems sony is up to their old dirty tricks.  For those who don't know they developed their own DVD2 format BluRay and other companies developed another one.  So instead of competing, Sony just buys out the company that owns the competing standard, MGM.

Overall I'm happy about this, as it would cemplicate the market if two different DVD successor standards came out.  Heck, just look how complicated the whole DVD+r/DVD-r is when it comes to deciding which burner to buy, what discs to buy, etc.

Hopefully Sony will play nice and not get greedy about it, I'll have to cross my fingers on this one.

There is a part of me that is worried, as people in their late 20s/early 30s probably know that it was Sony who destroyed their BetaMax standard, which was superior to VHS.  Hopefully they'll remember their past mistakes and we'll have a DVD2 standard that actually get's accepted.

Hhhmm... I didn't know about that Betamax and VHS thing. Anyway, I've heard about that BluRay which uses blue light instead of red, right? Which makes the holes smaller coz they have shorter wavelenghts. I think it's good, but it aint compatible with previous DVDs. I hope they do.

Yes, BetaMax was better, in fact it is/was the format TV companies have been using to trade video. When for the past couple decades when you watched a video, it was off of a betamax tape. Consumer Beta tapes were smaller than VHS, the ones companies use are larger than VHS, but despite, it was a superior format, better video and aduio quality. Possibly the biggest factor in it's demise was that Sony refused to license tapes to porn companies. And as silly as that sounds, you must realize porn is the mother of all technology adoption. Heck, just look at the Internet itself.

Haha now that's something. I always thought that VHS was better at audio and video... we had a betamax player before... but VHS was a lot better... I didn't know much back then... LOL... Anyway, discs are now the "in" thing. I hope BluRay does turn out OK. I've read that a 4GB DVD can store up to 26GB by using BluRay... it's just not compatible with previous DVDs.
