"Twas the night before Christmas"
Back in 2001 I had written this little poem for an onlime contest and won, but never got my prize. I figure it's worth unearthing as it's funny, as long as you're a nerd who gets the jokes.
T'was the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a cooling fan was turning, -- not even a Papst;
The servers were idle by the router with care,
In hopes that Linus Torvalds soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Athlons danced in their heads;
Mamma in her lingerie, while I had other intentions,
Had just settled down for a long midnight irc session
When my 75GXP hard drive there arose such a clatter,
My laptop rebooted, and I screamed "whats the matter?".
Away to the bios I applied a new flash,
And saw all my sectors, died in the crash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Let me know all my files, were about to go.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Norton Disk Rescue, the CD was near.
Such a little old disk, so scratched and busted,
I knew in a moment my hand shall thrusted
The CD into my laptop as back my files did came,
And I whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, DOCs! now, HTMLs! now, BATs and JPEG!
On, SQL! on Linux! on, OpenGL and MPEG!
To the top of the file system! to the top of the drive!
Now undelete! undelete! undelete all!"
I jumped on my bed, and gave out a great whistle
As my drive did churn, and made a crunch like gristle
And for miles away, you could hear me scream might
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, BUT WITH A 75GXP IT'S GOOD-NIGHT."
