Not that they will be in short supply as every company and their mother are making one (which means nice low competitive prices) but I truly believe this years "Elmo" will be the MP3 player. Although I'm talking about grown up kids, and not your 5yr old.
I will admit because of prices, the MP3 player is still a bit high end for most people as a present, I feel we're just about to hit the tipping point of a MP3 player being the must have toy. Next Christmas I fully expect to see good $99-$129 MP3 players and they'll be even more popular.

By no means is that a complete list, nor much of a comparison, I'll update this article with a proper new comparison of MP3 players (with the market as hot as it is, even a 4 month old article is out of date).
