For those of you out there who wish to try Linux, but can't afford either to buy the CD (which at about $5US seems pretty cheap compared to the $500US or so for Windows) or doesn't have the bandwidth to download the ISOs, http://www.ubuntu.com/ will ship the Ubuntu CDs to you. For free! As in free beer, except a free operating system. Now if that's not an awesome idea, I don't know what is. But in addition, the new Ubuntu release includes the Linux Terminal Server Project, the open source alternative to Windows Terminal Server. Using LTSP, make your computer not one but many computers.

Waylon Kenning.

WINE can be easily installed using Synaptic, although you need internet connection.

You can read the guide:

Yeah, ubuntu works pretty well, I've tried the PPC and the x86 versions (and i'll try x86_64 in 2 weeks :D:D:D).

I wish they would change the colour scheme though.  It's a really nasty shade of brown.

Forgot to say that I ordered the disks from them, took 2 or 3 weeks to arrive, not bad all things considered.

I have just had this most awsome idea for a signature, that will save me thinking up a new one for every single forum!

well, you could try Kubuntu ... it's almost the same distribution, only uses as a base KDE instead of GNOME in Ubuntu.

I tried SuSE 10 and Ubuntu Breezy, but i prefer SuSE 10, because at the end of installation i have everything working (Internet, Sound, Video, Wireless, Modem) and SuSE has a nice administration tool (Yast 2).

Well, after installing Ubuntu you have the same thing, and as Novells SuSE, Ubuntu has the configuration tools. And the installation of Ubuntu is not any harder than SuSEs, just because of the text mode. :)

But with SuSE you have all the software you ever gonna need on one DVD or 5 CDs, as with Ubuntu, you'll have to download everything by yourself, but it's NOT hard. Just use the apropriate tools, like Synaptic for example.

But first of all, read the guide. :)
