hello,

I've got 2 questions :)

I've got a Windows 2003 Server running here and when I want to shut it down, it won't poweroff. So I have to manually have to shut down the server. Can anyone tell me where I can adjust this setting? It's an ATX case and also the motherboard supports ATX (it used to work when that computer was running WindowsXP) Can anyone help me out here?

The second question is about the Line-In on my soundcard (on the same Win2K3 machine). The computer plays sounds perfectly but I can't record from the line-in. I've already checked if it wasn't muted (it wasn't). The OS recognizes the soundcard fully (the soundcard is integrated on my motherboard). Can anyone tell me what the problem could be (and maybe some sollutions to...that would be great :) )

thanks in advance,

Regarding your first question, I remember the days when I was running Linux on my former computer and I had the same problem. It was caused by a bug in the BIOS and I had to recompile the kernel with an option like "enable workaround for bug in BIOS..." :-).

I suppose this bug disappeared in newer BIOSes so Microsoft decided to "#if 0" the lines concerning that workaround. Unfortunately you cannot recompile your kernel :-).

regarding line in, when you go to Volume Control > properties > and select the Recording (from the Adjust Volume for options), line in should have a check mark

A lot of motherboards come with built in "AC97" audio.

They have a lot of "autosensing" ports, which, half the time, I find, do not sense the devices properly.  See if you have such a configuration utility and make sure it is detecting a microphone connected to your "Line-In".  If it isn't, you might want to try a different microphone...

oops..

And regarding the poweroff - you might want to check your power options - make sure things like ACPI are detected and enabled.  IIRC - this is in System properties - although I can't quite remember.

I believe this is what talks to your BIOS upon system shutdown, to make the computer turn off.

okay i hope i can help u !!
1. i think you pc doesn't support ACPI n you should change manually from your motherboard bios to WDM [CMIIW]
2. it cann't record maybe cause you use same hardware like me AC97 codecs onboard, try to you use Creative Vibra or sound blaster...

regarding the power-off issue, you can try to update your BIOS. I had the same problem when I changed from Linux to Windows Server 2003. Strangely it worked with Linux, but the PC didn't react in 2003. A BIOS updated helped, now everything is fine.
Another thing you might try is check you Group Policies, I'm not sure whether this way of shutting down is allowed by default.

Hi,

In regard to the Server shutdown issue, what edition of W2K3 are you using? I have read that in different editons power management and device support are different. I am running W2K3 Standard and have noticed that on 2 of my 3 boxes only once in a great while would it totally power off.

Group Policy is a great place to check also maybe check with the motherboard manufacturer to see if they have a workaround other than upgrading your BIOS. Also maybe your account permissions could be limiting some power management features. Just a suggestion.

Cheers!

Yes, I'm also running Win2k3 Standard. I'll have a look at the group policies. :)

Thanks for all the help guys :)
