Simply, sms is received on a mobile phone by the process sending the packet (SMS) via electromagnetic wave on a specific frequency and wavelenght which is different from audio communication. The mobile then sends the packet to the 'cell' in which in you are in. (Every area as cells covering that area, almost shaped like a hexagon which are not viewable). Furthermore the packet then is received by your provider's base station near where you are located. From here the station then sends the packet to the desired mobile to which you are sending. During this process the packet is encrypted and broken into bits or even bytes of data. When it is received by the mobile, the mobile decrypts the message and put the raw data into information, hence the SMS characters. In the case of an LCD mobile, once the mobile puts the message together, the crystals embedded on the screen turn on and off producing coloured pixels, constructing the characters.
