How to create extension for Microsoft Outlook Calendar?

I would like to create an extension or add some features of my own to the calendaring part of Microsoft Outlook.
What kind of skill/knowledge should I need to be able to do it?
I've googled and found a few books such as Microsoft Outlook Programming and would like to know if this book would be helpful to me. Can anyone point me to the right direction?
